For projects frequently exposed to temperatures above 90°F, what factors do you consider in design and component selection?

Thermal management is a critical factor in designing utility-scale solar and energy storage systems, particularly in environments where ambient temperatures frequently exceed 90°F. Elevated heat can affect electrical performance, necessitating the evaluation and adjustment of each component based on anticipated operating conditions rather than just nominal ratings.  

Most electrical components (including inverters and conductors) experience performance degradation under high temperatures. For instance, inverters have a maximum rated full capacity of up to 30°C (86°F), but typically undergo minor derating for every degree above this temperature. In locations exceeding 40°C (104°F), output may drop below 95%. Conductors face similar limitations; elevated temperatures reduce their current-carrying capacity, necessitating increased size or additional wiring.

To compensate, designers must adjust the expected system performance based on temperature and modify the quantity or dimensions of components accordingly. This ensures long-term reliability, safety, and optimal energy output. Verifying the thermal characteristics of each component directly with manufacturers is crucial. This data-driven approach enables the design team to accurately model system behavior under real-world conditions and maintain consistent, reliable performance throughout the system's lifecycle.
